A man who thought he'd make his trip to a small Shanghai police station worth his time by walking out with an officer's mobile phone is in custody.
The thief, surnamed Hu, was caught last Wednesday when he tried to exit the police station with the phone that was left unattended and charging on a desk.
Unfortunately for Hu, he couldn't open the station doors, which require a swipe card.
Police said Hu sought to file a civil complaint against an employment agency because he "didn't like the job" he was given.
Two of the three officers on duty at the station were busy with fighting a small fire at the entrance. The third officer, surnamed Liu, rejected his request.
Liu then made the mistake of leaving Hu in the station's office with his phone charging on the desk, police surveillance video shows.
Not wanting to leave empty handed, Hu grabbed Liu's phone and attempted escape. When he realizes he's locked in, Hu ditches the phone on the couch, the video shows.
Liu returned and noticed his phone had been moved. He promptly reviewed the incriminating video footage of Hu.
"I just felt bad because they didn't take my complaint seriously, so I took the cell phone to sell it to make myself feel better," Hu said.
"A fool like me is not suited to work in Shanghai. I had better go back to the farm," he added.
